West Marine Is Leaving South River Colony. Where Does an Edgewater Boater Buy a Zinc Now?

If you need a zinc, a dock line or a new fender before your boat comes out of the water this fall, where do you go? For years the answer for many South River boaters was a short drive up Solomons Island Road to The Market at South River Colony. West Marine has now put that store on its closure list.

The errand is still easy to run from Edgewater. It just no longer happens at a single store on Route 2. A marina ship store on Selby Bay, two independent chandleries in Annapolis and a West Marine inside a marina south of Deale each cover part of it. Below is where each one fits as a boat moves through the fall.

What has been announced, and what hasn't

Eye on Annapolis reported on June 17, 2026 that West Marine would close its Edgewater store at 3257 Solomons Island Road as part of a restructuring that eliminates 59 locations across 23 states. That June report counted four Maryland stores on the list, with Baltimore, Ocean City and Rock Hall joining Edgewater. The company's current closures page also lists a fifth Maryland store, in North East. The closures followed the company's Chapter 11 filing in May. West Marine pointed to long-term lease costs, inflation, changes in consumer spending, extreme weather and inventory left over from the pandemic-era boating boom.

As of early October, the West Marine store closures page still lists the Edgewater store at 3257-B Solomon's Island Rd. No closing date had been announced when the closure was reported in June. None of the coverage we reviewed confirms a final day, a store-specific liquidation sale or a new tenant for the space. If you're counting on that shelf for one more trip, call the store first.

Haul-out starts on the river: Anchor Yacht Basin

For a boat kept on the South River, the first stop of the fall is usually the boatyard, not a store. Anchor Yacht Basin sits at the mouth of the South River on Selby Bay, at 1048 Turkey Point Road in Edgewater. The marina has 125 wet slips for boats from 20 to 80 feet, two travel lifts and a 75-ton lift that takes beams up to 28 feet. The marina describes that lift as the largest haul-out capacity on the South River.

The yard work that sends many owners shopping is done right there. The marina lists power washing, bottom paint and zincs among its haul-out services, plus hauling, blocking and winter dry storage for any boat its lift can handle. If the yard is replacing your zincs, you may not need to buy any yourself.

The marina's Ship Store is at the fuel dock and sells boat supplies, snacks and Anchor Yacht Basin merchandise. The dock also has gas, diesel and pump-out service. Fuel dock hours change with the season, and customers can get access 24/7 by appointment. The Ship Store is good for a forgotten item on fuel day. For a full winterizing list, the Annapolis stores are the better trip.

The parts run goes to Annapolis during boat show weeks

The largest selection near Edgewater is now in Annapolis, and the timing this month helps. The U.S. Powerboat Show runs October 8 to 11, 2026, and the Sailboat Show runs October 15 to 18 at City Dock.

Fawcett Boat Supplies has been an Annapolis chandlery since 1948. It sells apparel, safety gear, hardware and electrical supplies, and its staff rig and maintain boats themselves. From October 8 through 18, the store at 919 Bay Ridge Road is offering 10% off in-store purchases, with hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. during that stretch. At the Sailboat Show, Fawcett is at booth Land 9 with show pricing on brands including Gill, Helly Hansen, Mustang, ACR Electronics and Vetus/Maxwell. Its subsidiary, Annapolis Inflatables, has booths at Land 10 through Land 12. Show tickets are $32 for general admission. Parking is at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, with a free shuttle to City Dock.

Bacon Sails & Marine Supplies at 116 Legion Avenue sells new and used boat parts and equipment, along with sailboat hardware, rigging and sails. Used gear is hard to find at a chain store. If you need an older fitting or are upgrading rigging on a budget, Bacon Sails may have what a general retailer doesn't stock.

West Marine Annapolis at 113 Hillsmere Drive is the closest store from the same chain, and the company lists daily hours there. When the closures were announced, Naptown Scoop noted that the Hillsmere store would stay open "for now." West Marine has said it is keeping its remaining stores, its website and its West Marine Pro App for customers. Online orders can cover routine restocking when the drive isn't worth it.

The chain store south: Herrington Harbour North

Boats kept on the lower end of the Edgewater and Mayo peninsula, or farther down toward Deale, have another option. West Marine's Tracy's Landing store is at 389 Deale Road inside Herrington Harbour North. It carries the same chain inventory as Hillsmere and sits inside a working marina.

What's coming to South River Colony instead

Every new business announced around South River Colony this year serves breakfast or fitness. None of them is a marine store. Nico's Bagels & Brunch announced a July 9, 2026, grand opening for its second location at South River Colony Center, 100 Central Avenue. Founders Jerry Osuna and Dan and Joy Shields serve New York-style bagels and brunch. The Stable Strength and Conditioning, owned by Alex and Annie Witkus, scheduled an October 3 grand opening at 189 Mitchells Chance Road on Main Street at South River Colony.

Farther down Solomons Island Road, Basilwood Kitchen opened on August 21 at 3059 Solomons Island Road, Suite F1. It's an Italian restaurant and market from founder Ginna Maznick that makes bronze-die pasta daily, slow-fermented pizza dough and house sauces. Its market counter sells raw pasta, dough, sauces, meatballs and cutlets to finish at home. It's open 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and noon to 7 p.m. Sunday. That makes it an easy stop for dinner on the way home from a long day at the boatyard.
